100 bottles of beer on the wall

Boston has been named the drunkest city in America, according to The Daily Beast. Think about that the next time someone says we need to extend closing hours to 3AM. Meanwhile, the BPD stopped by the Joshua Tree Saturday night, which they continue to monitor after a fist-fight among patrons this summer. The watering hole was named one of Boston’s douchiest bars back in the fall.

Man dies of stabbing in Allston, Boston’s first homicide for 2013

A man perished of stab wounds this morning outside 48 Pratt Street in Allston. Police arrived at 2:43AM and found the victim bleeding heavily.

The owners of the property are Carla and Charles Husak of Georgetown, MA. It is listed as a six bedroom home in city records. They purchased the property in July 2008 for $430,000 with a $382,000 mortgage.

The “parties” in South Allston get worse and worse, and add to a sense that large parts of the neighborhood are becoming unsafe. The police can end up overwhelmed with calls, and how are they to know which party will turn violent?

UPDATE: The Boston Police state they have arrested Brian MacDonald, age 24, for the murder.

Neighbors unhappy, Harvard shrugs

Neighbors have written the Boston Redevelopment Authority, expressing their displeasure with Harvard’s latest plans for North Allston. It doesn’t sound like they will get much satisfaction from the BRA, based on comments from their point person for the site. Can we ask where is the mayor on this?

The Allston Brighton Coast

According to this map, all of North Allston and North Brighton would end up submerged if the ocean continues to rise. Of course, the most extreme scenario is hundreds of years away, but still. Harvard might want to think twice about spending all that money in an area that may end up under water.

BU student on bike dies after being hit by bus

Last night a BU student was hit and killed by a collision with an MBTA bus at the corner of Harvard and Brighton Avenues in Allston. The incident is under investigation by Boston and MBTA police.

This is the second bicyclist in Boston to die this year. It may be time to take another look at safety rules and bike routes. Does it make sense to put them on main roads, or would it be better to divert them to side streets where traffic is slower and cars don’t dominate the road as much?

Stink bomb of a party

The BPD shut down a party at 2 Guilford Street near Union Square in Allston in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 23. As they were doing this one of the departing partygoers tossed a stink bomb at a house farther down Guildford Street, apparently in retaliation for complaints about all the noise. It being a crazy night, the officers didn’t arrest anyone but did issue a summons for public drinking. The owner of this single-family is listed as Theano Tsekrekas of Greece. Now, someone must be managing the property locally. Wonder who?

Drink deeper and later, in Allston but nowhere else

Union Square’s Deep Ellum today received permission to extend its operating hours, allowing it to serve food and alcohol until 2AM from the current 1AM. They will also be be allowed to keep their outdoor patio open until 11PM during warm weather.

With this decision and the one allowing the Avenue Bar and Grill to join the 2AM bar brigade, the Licensing Board has established that it will approve the latest close possible for any bar in the Harvard Avenue area of Allston, as long as it can claim that it is run responsibly.

Why just Allston? There are plenty of bars in Brighton that are run well and have to turn off the taps at 1AM.

Why was the South Boston Dominos Pizza denied when it asked to sell and deliver pies until 3AM, but the one in Allston approved?

South Allston doesn’t vote in local elections. North Allston, Brighton and South Boston do.

It wasn’t dreary until Harvard got involved

Harvard’s submission for developing its tracts of land in Allston were released today by the Boston Redevelopment Authority. The Globe article refers to Allston as a “dreary section of the city”, but the biggest drag on the neighborhood has been Harvard’s practice of purchasing property, emptying it of tenants, and leaving it vacant for years. And let’s not forget the huge hole on Western Avenue, the someday site of a science complex.

Harvard’s dog’s breakfast development model

Harvard University has announced its latest ideas for North Allston. A hotel and conference center and basketball stadium are proposed, along with additional buildings for the business school. Construction would occur over a ten-year period. The university will submit its plans to City Hall next week.

Harvard seems to be using a dog’s breakfast model for developing its Allston demense, tossing in various uses and structures with no real vision of how it will all work together. There was no hint of a basketball stadium until the team became much more successful in recent years.
