The Joseph Smith Health Center hopes to consolidate its operations into a new, $19.1 million facility. The center was recently awarded $5 million under a federal government to build new community health care sites. So far the center has not announced any details on where it might be located or what the timeline is.
Rock of Allston
Not Allston Rock City or a basement show. This marker, dating from 1729, is being restored.
A real (so far) crack-down on absentee owners
The city is continuing its push against irresponsible landlords. The initiative started in response to a fire at 81 Linden Street, Allston that left one student with a brain injury after he had to jump from the second story to escape from the flames.
It’s good that the city is encouraging the students who live in these buildings to know their rights and file complaints about the unsafe conditions they live in. Another option they have is to withhold rent, depending on the circumstances. That will get the attention of owners like Joseph Ciliberti of Newton, who has over $37,000 in unpaid fines for code violations and a disconnected phone.
Here’s to hoping that the city continues to make this a priority, and doesn’t drop it as it did in the past.
Keyless entry
Boston police responded to call of a breaking and entering at 3:30AM Sunday morning at 33 Highgate Street in Allston. After a brief chase, they apprehended the suspect, who was quite apologetic, but still arrested.
Highgate Street runs from Cambridge Street to Farrington Avenue, and is often used as a short cut to Brighton Avenue. Don’t do it during rush hour, it is not allowed during that time and police sometimes pull people over for making the turn when they’re not distracted by burglars.
Clean & shine
The city’s annual park clean-up is taking place this Saturday, April 28 from 8:30AM to 2PM. Contact Angela Holm in the Office of Neighborhood Services (617-635-3485) if you want to help out.
The Hobart Park Neighborhood Association in particular is looking for help. Let them know you are available at hpna -at- usa.net.

Arraigned, expelled, evicted
The students from the Ashford Street fraternity are getting hit from all sides. The Alpha Epsilon Pi bro’s are scheduled to appear in Brighton District Court on May 7 for the hazing. Their landlord wants to evict them. And BU says it will expel them. The national fraternity has suspended the chapter. Of course, innocent until proven guilty, they will get their day before local judges and university officials. Yeah, right. Say goodbye to Allston, boys.
Milo is missing
If you love your pet, it’s tough to see someone else lose theirs. Call 617.921.1181 if you have info.
Duct tape & condiments
Our local police rescued a bunch of BU fraternity pledges, and now have some fun stories to tell, after discovering five students wearing only their underwear and hot sauce, fish sauce, sardine cans and other accessories.
Makes you wish Dr. Silber were still around, just to hear him rant about the decline of Western Civilization and future BU donors. (h/t Adam at Universal Hub)
Acronyms battle, jobs at stake
Wow. Action for Boston Community Development has whacked the funding of longtime – we’re talking at least three decades here – Allston Brighton APAC director Paul Creighton. APAC is the acronym for the Area Planning Action Council, located on Harvard Avenue. Paul has run for Allston Brighton district city council three times. The whole thing has ended up in court. The APAC, meaning Mr. Creighton, has always managed to survive below the radar, enduring changes in US presidents, Boston mayors and sundry local elected officials. So who did he piss off?

Allston murder ends in life in prison
A name-calling incident that escalated into a murder near the corner of Harvard and Brighton Avenues has ended in a sentence of life in prison for the perpetrator. The incident started at what was then the Kells, and a few steps away the the victim died, stabbed in the heart.
Will there be a red carpet?
You thought there was enough drama in the streets of Allston already? The developers of 9-23 Griggs Street are offering a theater as one of the amenities. Residents will also benefit from the usual fitness center and roof deck. Mount Vernon Company, the developer, has also been acquiring some other property in the area, most recently 83 rental apartments at 74-86 Brainerd Road. And this Thursday they will be at the Brighton Allston Improvement Association to talk about a proposal for 79 units at 66 Brainerd Road. They have a lot going on in a small sliver along the Brookline border, it will be interesting to see what else they want to do.
Patron passes out on table
Tuesday the Licensing Board will hear what some local watering holes have to say in response to the following:
Tavern in the Square in Allston was hit with a charge of serving a 64-ounce pitcher of beer to only one person. This is violates the law that limits one person from being given more that two drinks at a time, and is also basically unenforceable by bar staff.
Around the corner on Harvard Avenue, Wonder Bar got nabbed for an employee on patron assault and serving a minor.
And Myong Dong, a Korean restaurant and bar also on Harvard Avenue, will have to explain why they served so much booze to a patron he passed out on the table. The place was also cited for overcrowding. Well, obviously, if the place was that packed, the table was the only place to sleep it off.
Student loans, worldwide protests and local bars
“Noise from the Underground” is offering what may be a once in a lifetime chance to experience the art, music and “youthful consciousness” that animate the basements of Allston.
The website proclaims that the subterranean hipster-fest will be “drawing influences from music, advertisements, and the social and political issues we all face, from student loans and worldwide protests to occupying local bars on a nightly basis…”
Jeez, I was going to some of these watering holes in high school. Didn’t know I was part of an occupation. But this sounds like it could be a blast. Hit their site for info on how to attend.
